If you read this post from a couple of weeks ago, then you know I’ve added a new job title around here lately.  Officially, I’m going with Airbnb Hostess Extraordinaire, but basically, we’re renting out two different cottage spaces on Little Balboa Island in Newport Beach.  (Read this post for a little back story.) . The front, lower unit has been up and moving for a few weeks now, but as of this week, the upstairs unit is finally ready to rent.

This one took a little more work to get it ready for visitors, but now I have to say I love it.  It’s cute and comfortable and has a similar open and airy feel to the downstairs unit with two bedrooms, each with a queen sized bed.  My favorite feature of this one though?  Climb the spiral staircase in the kitchen to the large, private rooftop deck that I’m admittedly obsessed with.  Those sling chairs (above) are seriously comfortable and just begging for some summertime rooftop hangs.  I told Eric not to be surprised if he saw a familiar name (mine) on the rental calendar this summer because I genuinely just want to hang out here.

You can check out both of the units here and follow along with @thebalboacottage on Instagram for more local snaps and attractions.  If you’re looking for someplace sunny to spend a little time this spring or summer, we’d love to have you!

Well, guys, we recently did a little thing.  If you read this post from a couple of weeks ago, then you already know that Eric and I recently bought a new house.  I realize that I spilled the news and then promptly left you guys completely in the dark, but today I’m so excited to finally give you guys a full peek into what I’m lovingly referring to as The Balboa Cottage.

If you’ve been following along for a while, then you might remember that Eric and I closed on our first home on our wedding day.  (How’s that for timing?)  It was a mess of a house that needed a full overhaul and so much TLC, but after months and months of gutting and rebuilding, it became our home sweet home.  We love our home and have genuinely loved being in Huntington Beach (where Eric grew up), but I think that Newport Beach, and more specifically Balboa Island, has been a dream in the back of our minds for some time.  We just didn’t really think it would happen this quickly.

A few months ago, we started putting our feelers out and looking around at listings on Balboa Island.  We checked out a couple of “no’s” and then saw this little gem. The location is a total dream.  If Balboa Island was the home run, then Little Balboa Island for us is the grand slam, and we love that it’s right on Grand Canal.  Our spot on the Little Island is a bit quieter, less crowded for the most part, but still a short walk to the shops, restaurants, and attractions on Marine Avenue on Balboa.  It’s also a couple minutes to plopping down on the sand.

The house is small and sweet, currently consisting of two separate two-bedroom units.  While the cottage isn’t really a good fit for us (and our two crazy Vizsla pups) right now, we just couldn’t unsee the potential.  We knew that if we passed it up, we’d probably end up kicking ourselves, and so, we went for it.  And things got rolling QUICKLY.  We closed on the cottage a month or so ago and already can’t stop thinking about the forever home we’d like to create there.  That’s right, more construction in my future.  (Didn’t I say we were done with construction for a while?)

For now though, we’re figuring out our plans for the cottage (staying put in Huntington Beach), and in the meantime, we’re renting her out to folks looking to spend a little time on Balboa Island.  (Maybe that’s you?  Ha, can you tell I’m taking my new roll as Airbnb host very seriously?)  After several thousand trips to this store and that and more online ordering than I even care to think about, the front unit is fully stocked with vacation essentials and ready to rent.  (We’ve actually hosted our first four bookings already, too!)  The upper unit needed a bit more work, but it’s coming THIS WEEK – and wait until you see the huge rooftop deck.  It’s incredible, and I’ll be sharing it soon!

It’s been a wild couple of weeks, but sharing The Balboa Cottage and our love of all things Balboa Island with vacationers from all around has been so much fun.  If you’re planning on heading to Newport Beach this spring or summer, I hope you’ll check it out.  We’d love to host you!

Happy New Year, my long lost friends!  Yes, I realize we are already halfway through January (WHAAAT?!) and that my last post was wayyy back at the beginning of December, but I can honestly say I have no regrets about it.  Well, that’s not true.  I do wish I had shared more snaps of our holiday home decor because it’s 100% my favorite time of year in our house, but other than that, I’m so glad that I spent the holidays being present and just celebrating my favorite time of year with family and friends.

Things have admittedly changed for me in the last couple of years in the blogosphere, and that’s OK.  I worked hard to build an authentic, genuine following here on the blog, and your support has meant and will continue to mean the world to me.  THANK YOU for following along all these years!  Over the years I’ve probably failed to keep up with some of the blogging trends out there – I NEVER got into Snapchat (still don’t get it), have zero interest in creating Youtube videos, am terrible at keeping up with Instagram stories, and, in general, was VERY late to the Instagram game.  And don’t even try to talk to me about TikTok – I have NO idea what that app is about.  Impeding, maybe, but I’m OK with that too because these just never felt very “me”.

These days, managing our Airbnb property takes up a good bit of my time, and when it comes to lots of events and travel, well, I really just love being at home with my husband and pups.  While I’ve continued to post on Instagram, the blog has been a bit neglected.  But now, the new year is here and it’s time I get back to sharing the things clouding up my headspace – fashion, home decor, and (obviously) the Amazon purchases I’m loving.  My 2020 goal is a handful of posts a month on only my favorite looks, finds, and random thoughts…and the dogs.  Obviously the dogs.

And so today, kicking off my 2020 posts with an outfit full of favorites.  I actually grabbed this dress in the orange color back in late November but decided to swap it once I saw the black color online.  It was on backorder but finally came in, and I LOVE it.  I love the fitted top, flowy skirt, sheer sleeves, and easy floral print.  It’s beyond comfortable, and I’m digging it with booties and a leather jacket now and sneakers and a denim jacket into spring.  Speaking of leather jackets, this favorite with gold hardware is currently on major sale and feels so much more expensive than it is.  Also, if you haven’t checked out these under $20 Amazon hats yet, you’re seriously missing out on a steal.

Happy 2020 and a BIG, FAT THANK YOU to all of you for following along!

And just like that, it’s the middle of May.  I saw a meme somewhere recently that adulting is just repeatedly freaking out over what day slash month we’re in now and how in the world we got there.  Well consider me an adult I suppose because here we are.  It’s been a couple of weeks since I checked in here, so apologies from one bad blogger!  Life has been crazy busy around here lately, but I’m not complaining.

For starters, the Airbnb Hostess gig has been pretty wild.  Our calendar is packed, and the inquiries keep rolling in.  There have been ups and downs for sure and some learning happening on my end, but for the most part it’s been a wild, fun ride.  We actually had a last-minute cancellation for Mother’s Day, so we were able to host Eric’s family on Balboa Island this past Sunday which was so much fun.  But here’s hoping the momentum keeps going with those summer bookings coming in.

This week is also a pretty crazy one work-wise for Eric.  He’s finishing up a big project and realized that he really needs to spend a ton of time on the job site in Beverly Hills this week and next.  So we packed up the pups and are spending a few nights posted up in a hotel in the area so that Eric is just a short drive from the site.  I may head back and forth a couple of times, but for the most part, we just like to start and end our days together.  Pups included 🙂

So blame it on my newfound hotel life this week (complete with about 30 treks downstairs with the pups each day for bathroom breaks), but this bad blogger finally had a chance to get a new blog post up.  Or maybe we’ll just blame it on these new spring sneakers that I couldn’t wait to share.  Like, loving them mucho.  They’re perforated with a touch of leopard calfhair and the perfect little pop of red.  With spring dresses, denim cutoffs, and even white skinnies – I’m obsessed.

Bonus points that they’re so dang comfortable, especially with these spoiled pups, living their best hotel life and loving nothing more than prancing all over Beverly Hills all day.  Should be a couple of interesting weeks ahead for sure!  Here’s hoping you guys have a good one.

It may be only April, but we’ve already had our first couple of swimsuit weather days around here, and I’m 100% on board.  I’ve got my sights firmly set on ALL of the spring, summer, and resort style pieces, and the number one item on my list every year?  Gimme all of the cute swimsuit coverups.  During the spring and summer months I tend to live in coverups, and during our Palm Springs weekends in particular, I’ll usually ditch the swimsuit and throw one on over slip to go from the pool to dinner or drinks.

So today I’m rounding up twenty-five favorites – from dresses to rompers, caftans and sarong styles – in a range of prices.  Click through below to find your new favorite.  Now excuse me while I go throw a few in a bag for the desert weekend ahead.  Happy almost Friday, everyone!

Well hello, old friends!  It’s been a (long) minute since I’ve updated the old blog, but today it’s good to be back.  It’s been a wild couple of weeks around here with a little surgery, closing on a new home, SO much furnishing and decorating, and jumping into becoming an Airbnb host for the first time.  Lots to digest, right?  Where do I start?

I’ll start with the whole surgery thing.  I mentioned it over on this post last week and then completely forgot that I ever said anything.  Over the past few years I’ve dealt with ovarian cysts on a regular basis.  It was always uncomfortable and slightly painful but nothing too crazy and something that always came and went in waves.  A hereditary sitch, not much I could do about it.

Recently though, something changed, and I was experiencing really painful, debilitating flare-ups.  The kind that left me curled up in a ball on the floor, unable to stand or crawl into bed without Eric’s help.  Something had to give.  An ultrasound revealed that I had a cyst on my (hugely swollen) left ovary the size of a tennis ball and a pretty large cyst on my right ovary as well.  These were large enough that they weren’t going to go away on their own, so last week, I had them both removed.

Perhaps it seems like a little TMI, but I wanted to share for anyone else going through something similar.  The surgery was pretty routine with three small incisions and about two hours under anesthesia, and after a weekend full of sleeping, this week I’m definitely on the mend.  (I had high hopes of catching up on blog posts and such while hanging out in bed, but nope – I blame the painkillers and HGTV.)  While I’m feeling pretty good this week, I’ve got a bit of lingering nerve pain near one of the incisions that we are still trying to get a handle on.  That said, I’ve been hobbling around at a slower pace than normal these days which has made my current home decor project a little…difficult.

Which brings me to the next tidbit of news – we bought a house!  Interesting timing, I know, but we are so excited, and I can’t wait to share the full details with you guys so soon.  I’m waiting on a couple more furniture and decor deliveries and will have a full blog post up next week, but you can take a sneak peek here.  I hope you guys will follow along!

And so here we are – surgery, nonstop rainy forecasts, and a few wild days behind me, I’ve got my sights set on spring and some fun projects ahead.  But first?  The weekend.  Happy almost Friday, friends!

Unplugging for World Mental Health Day

Happy Friday, friends.  October is here and I’m HERE for it.  And next week, there’s a particular day that I’m definitely here for.  My friends over at Suja reminded me that Wednesday, October 10th is World Mental Health Day, and I can’t support it more.

In this world, there is literally no cause or day I can get behind more, and I shared a little bit of my heart last year in this post.  I miss my brother a ton and always aim to celebrate his memory.  Today I also want to celebrate and spread a little love to those going through the rough time right now, or maybe, those who could just use a little self-love.

Life is crazy.  The work grind, the mortgage or rent cycle, balancing relationships, car issues, this problem and that.  Sometimes I think we all need to take a little time for ourselves.  You’ve probably seen people posting about “Self-Love Sundays” or something similar, and while it may seem a little cliche, it’s something we should all get behind.

Sometimes we all need to check out.  To do a little something just for ourselves.  For me?  It’s a long bath, doing ALL the treatments to my face, taking my pup for a walk around Balboa Island, and my favorite, taking a little time to unplug.  How much does Instagram mess with my head and make me a crazy person?  A ton.  (Thanks, algorithm.)  So on October 10th, I’ll be taking a little unplug day.  No blog post, no Instagram posts, and maybe a long bath.  (Go, me!)

I really can’t think of a better reason to unplug, take a second, and give myself a much-needed day off.  And I wish the same to you!  Let’s take a day to focus on ourselves, reach out to the family and friends who need us, and maybe give a stranger a smile.  You never know who needs it.  Can we all just try to be nicer to each other?  I think we can.  Happy weekend, friends.

OC Restaurant Week: My Top Spots on the List

orange-county-restaurant-week This week is seriously just flying by.  Before I even realized it, we’re smack dab in the middle of Orange County Restaurant Week, and this time around, I’m determined to take advantage.  Are you guys familiar with OC Restaurant Week?  It’s a week when some of the area’s best restaurants offer specially priced, prix fixe menus for lunch and dinner, and it goes through this Saturday, March 11th.  It’s the best time to check out a restaurant you’ve been wanting to try, or to branch out and maybe taste something new at your favorite spot.  I always say that I want to try a new place on the list, and somehow, we always forget.  Not this time!  The full list of restaurants that are participating this time around can be found right over here along with the menu options they are offering.  Lunches range from $10 to $20 per person, and dinners run from $20 to $50 per person, depending on the restaurant.  Below I’m rounding up a few of my favorite places on the list, and whether you’re a local or just visiting, I think these are all pretty great.  New spots I’d love to try?  Beachcomber Cafe, Five Crowns (I’ve been once a while back but would love to go again), and Skyloft.  Any on the list that you guys have tried and loved?

AnQi – Admittedly, I don’t even know what to recommend here because a few friends and I enjoyed a whole tasting menu bonanza, and I just couldn’t leave it off the list.  If Asian fusion is your thing, then this is your next date-night spot.

Cafe Gratitude – For the vegans (and non-vegans really) looking for a new place to try.  Personally, I’m into the bowls.  And absolutely do not go here without getting a cocktail – the Skinny Margarita is fresh AF.

Canaletto – For me this is a go-to for a girls’ happy hour.  The bar area is light and bright with fireplaces lit in the winter time, and the menu includes glasses of wine, pizzas and flatbreads, and yummy Italian appetizers for a happy hour steal.

CUCINA Enoteca – This one is probably my favorite restaurant in Fashion Island, and there are a lot of good ones there.  (A bunch on this list, actually.)  Their polenta board is hands-down my favorite thing on the menu, but I also love the giant meatball, the burnt brussel sprouts, and the burrata jar, all for sharing.

Fig & Olive – There are a few of these around the US, but I feel like the Newport Beach location is so nice for apps and vino with the girls or a full-blown three hour (plus) lunch – I’ve done both.  The Crostinis are my main jam, and I really could just make a meal out of mixing and matching them.  (Check out the photo above.)

Fly N Fish Oyster Bar and Grill – Located right by the Newport Beach pier and the beach itself, this is the place I love to take out-of-town guests.  Every time we go to Fly N Fish, I wish so badly that I liked oysters, but sadly I just don’t.  Luckily I DO love clam chowder, and Fly N Fish has some of the best that I’ve tried.  I usually get it in a bread bowl with a glass of wine and call it a day.

Newport Landing – Located right in the Balboa Fun Zone, this place has amazing water views from their upstairs patio.  Dine downstairs for a fancier vibe, or head upstairs to the bar / patio area for something a bit more casual.  They also have a great happy hour.

Red O Restaurant – Two words for you: spicy margarita.  It’s actually called the Alacran Margarita, and it’s my fave.  They also have a great happy hour if you’re looking for some apps to go along with that marg.

SeaLegs Wine Bar – I mean, you had me at wine, but this place also has amazing food.  And what I love best is hands-down the brunch.  A sourdough breakfast sandwich or bananas foster French toast anyone?  Yes and yes.  Luckily for me, this place is a short bike ride from our house in Huntington Beach.

The Capital Grille – Our first choice for a steak in Orange County is definitely A Restaurant (sadly not participating in OC Restaurant Week), but this place is really good too.  It’s my usual way to get Eric to agree to Christmas shopping with me – dinner at The Capital Grille followed by a couple of hours of speed shopping during South Coast Plaza’s extended holiday hours.  It’s pretty much a tradition these days.

If great minds think alike, then Jenn, Krystal, and I were #killingit this day and clearly thinking blue for spring.  (And swear, this was not planned when we packed our outfits for the day.)  This little blue dress of mine is about as good as it gets in my book: billowy dolman sleeves, a drop waist, and the yummiest, softest fabric.  Also, fun fact: I totally packed this dress in my New Orleans suitcase, and the wrinkle factor was a non-issue.  Anywho, here it is in all its glory with my favorite gladiator sandals from last year, but I’m equally excited to wear it with a pair of nude heels for a night out.  It’s a total splurge, but until the end of day today, it’s part of Shopbop’s Friends & Family sale.  Take 25% off with code “INTHEFAM“, and wear it like you mean it, sister.

If there’s anything that you might consider an obsession of mine, it’s anything that looks, feels, or remotely resembles a caftan, and this one had me at hello.  I specifically bought it for our post-wedding brunch this past Saturday, and it was just what I wanted to throw on after being in a wedding dress the day before.  It’s loose and airy without being a full-on moo moo.  (Do people outside of the South say moo moo?  Not sure.)  Luckily I snapped a few pics in it before we left for New Orleans because I pretty much took no pictures during our entire wedding week.  I was focused on having fun with family and friends, and luckily our photographer was there to catch the best moments.  (Will of course be sharing those here later!)  So today I’m back to California and getting used to being back in the real world.  Can we just rewind the last week?
