Better Days Ahead: Caftan Season

If you’re getting a little sick of the quarantine sweats and looking forward to something a little bit more spring, why not switch things up with a super comfy caftan instead?  Caftan season may just be my favorite (I’ve worn a bunch over the years).  During the summer months (and especially during HOT days in Palm Springs), my usual day to night look includes a pretty caftan thrown over a simple slip, and lucky for me right now, they’re just as good around the pool or on the beach as they are on the couch.

All dressed up with nowhere to be?  Someone hand me a cocktail because in my mind I’m already at the beach.

PJ’s in Public (Well, Eventually)

Look who busted out of quarantine!  (I kid, I kid – as I mentioned in this post, I shot a few spring looks ahead of time without even realizing the days that were coming.)  So today I’m sharing my favorite new PJ set that I fully intend to exclusively wear in public once, you know, going in public is cool again.

Way back in February (seems like a year ago), I found myself roaming around Target looking for a gift for a one-year-old’s birthday party.  And what do you know I somehow found myself in the loungewear department?  Y’all, if you’ve been sleeping on the Stars Above loungewear at Target, it’s time to quit hitting snooze because it is GOOD.  I ended up leaving with this set, this favorite set, and the striped pieces above.  (And a gift for the one-year-old.)

The pieces are beyond soft and can be worn together or separate.  (You can see the sweater paired with jeans here.)  The shorts will also be super cute with a simple white tee during summer months.  Each piece is under $20 and perfect for this current quarantine climate in SoCal.  And should you find yourself in the shopping mood, the sneakers, sunglasses, and favorite Gorjana necklace are all on sale.

A Spring Romper I Actually Want to Wear

Sometime around last summer, I decided I was done.  No more rompers for me.  I have a long torso, and it was pretty rare for me to find a romper that fit well.  Even then, I felt like I was spending all my time tugging and adjusting, and don’t even get me started on finding myself in a public restroom reaching for some back zipper.

Recently I came across this little leopard romper though and made an exception to my rule.  It’s super lightweight, loose and flowy, and fits more like a little shift dress than your average romper.  It’s got pockets and easy front buttons, and I couldn’t love the leopard print more.  And right now, you can snag it on sale at Nordstrom along with these super comfy rubber slides.

In fact, Nordstrom is currently offering 25% off sitewide (with a few brand exceptions).  I’m pretty sure I’ve never even seen a sitewide sale like this from Nordstrom, so I’ll definitely be taking advantage and spending a couple of gift cards from Christmas.  (Sometimes saving them pays off.)  If you’re looking to shop the sale too, I’m rounding up some of my favorite comfy, cozy, or just plain classic finds below.

My Most Comfortable (and Flattering) Jeans

You guys, I finally did it.  I dipped my toes into the “mom jeans” trend, and now there’s no turning back.  Am I late to the game?  Yes, but it’s not for lack of trying.  Over the last couple of seasons I’ve tried ALL of the popular pairs.  I tried ’em, and I promptly returned ’em.  After years and years of high rise, stretchy skinny jeans, I just couldn’t get used to the idea of non-stretch denim again.  They felt like torture devices, and I found myself wondering how I’d sit in them.  Sounds a little dramatic, but I swear it’s true.  I also never found a pair that I felt was as flattering as my good old skinnies.

That’s until I found this pair recently from Daze Denim.  It’s a new (or new-to-me at least) denim brand that I really can’t find much about on the interwebs besides the fact that they’re eco-friendly.  So that’s a win, right?  The real win for me though is the fit and feel of these jeans.  The denim is insanely soft, and when we’re talking non-stretch denim, I think softness is important.  They’ve got a really good high rise, easy distressing, and a hem that hits me in the perfect spot.

Size-wise, I’d say they’re pretty true.  For skinny jeans, I’m normally a 27/28 depending on the brand, and I bought these in a size 28.  (They’re a smidge on the loose side, but I’m into it.)  I’ve worn the heck out of these jeans in the last couple of weeks – with sweaters, tees, sneakers, and sandals.  I’m hoping to hear so much more from this brand in the coming months, but in the meantime, thinking I need to also grab this pair or this one…or maybe this new little cropped jacket.  For the price point, you really can’t go wrong.

Hope everyone is having a great week!

xoxo

The Best Flares to Wear Now and Into Spring

Best Free People flares to wear into spring | My Style Diaries blogger Nikki PrendergastBest Free People flares to wear into spring | My Style Diaries blogger Nikki PrendergastBest Free People flares to wear into spring | My Style Diaries blogger Nikki PrendergastBest Free People flares to wear into spring | My Style Diaries blogger Nikki Prendergast Free People flaressimilar teeAmazon sweaterLouis Vuitton handbagGorjana and Gold & Gray necklacesRay-Ban sunglasses

While the skinny jeans in my closet are definitely my most worn and loved, I’ve also got a real thing for a great pair of flares.  I spotted these at the Free People store in Palm Springs (with my size still in stock, naturally) and figured I’d try them on “just to see”.  Fast forward ten minutes later to me skipping out of the store with my new denim purchase.

They’ve got stretch but not too much stretch – so they’re comfortable and hug curves without sagging – and a super high rise.  I’d say they’re pretty true to size.  I normally take a 27 in Madewell’s super stretch denim, but I grabbed these in a 28 because they just felt more comfortable.  They come in 16 different washes (seriously, 16), and some of those washes are available in short, regular, and tall sizing.  And the best part?  They’re under $100.

I feel like styling flares can be a little intimidating, so today I’m sharing a couple of ways I’d wear these, now and into spring.  (Although for the spring look below, I’d probably switch up the long sleeved tee to this easy tank.)  I love keeping them long and pairing with a super high wedge to seriously elongate legs, and personally, I like them with a kimono or long cardigan to keep the lines long.  (But for shorter friends, I’ve seen a simple tucked or front-tucked tee work best.)

It can take a little trial and error, but once you figure out what works best for you, I think you’ll love these.  What do you think – are flares for you?

Happy New Year, my long lost friends!  Yes, I realize we are already halfway through January (WHAAAT?!) and that my last post was wayyy back at the beginning of December, but I can honestly say I have no regrets about it.  Well, that’s not true.  I do wish I had shared more snaps of our holiday home decor because it’s 100% my favorite time of year in our house, but other than that, I’m so glad that I spent the holidays being present and just celebrating my favorite time of year with family and friends.

Things have admittedly changed for me in the last couple of years in the blogosphere, and that’s OK.  I worked hard to build an authentic, genuine following here on the blog, and your support has meant and will continue to mean the world to me.  THANK YOU for following along all these years!  Over the years I’ve probably failed to keep up with some of the blogging trends out there – I NEVER got into Snapchat (still don’t get it), have zero interest in creating Youtube videos, am terrible at keeping up with Instagram stories, and, in general, was VERY late to the Instagram game.  And don’t even try to talk to me about TikTok – I have NO idea what that app is about.  Impeding, maybe, but I’m OK with that too because these just never felt very “me”.

These days, managing our Airbnb property takes up a good bit of my time, and when it comes to lots of events and travel, well, I really just love being at home with my husband and pups.  While I’ve continued to post on Instagram, the blog has been a bit neglected.  But now, the new year is here and it’s time I get back to sharing the things clouding up my headspace – fashion, home decor, and (obviously) the Amazon purchases I’m loving.  My 2020 goal is a handful of posts a month on only my favorite looks, finds, and random thoughts…and the dogs.  Obviously the dogs.

And so today, kicking off my 2020 posts with an outfit full of favorites.  I actually grabbed this dress in the orange color back in late November but decided to swap it once I saw the black color online.  It was on backorder but finally came in, and I LOVE it.  I love the fitted top, flowy skirt, sheer sleeves, and easy floral print.  It’s beyond comfortable, and I’m digging it with booties and a leather jacket now and sneakers and a denim jacket into spring.  Speaking of leather jackets, this favorite with gold hardware is currently on major sale and feels so much more expensive than it is.  Also, if you haven’t checked out these under $20 Amazon hats yet, you’re seriously missing out on a steal.

Happy 2020 and a BIG, FAT THANK YOU to all of you for following along!

xoxo

Four days of sweater weather in a row, and I’m over here like, where am I?  Not complaining, I’ll take it for sure because getting cozy is one of the things I do best.  Give me allll the sweaters, leggings, scarves, you name it.  Big shoutout to Mother Nature for finally turning down the heat in Southern California.

Since the sweater weather days can be pretty few and far between, I normally don’t buy many new sweaters each season.  The ones I have usually stay in pretty good shape because, you know, I probably wore it once.  But this year, a leopard sweater or sweater dress was at the top of my list, and I snagged this one just in time before it sold out.  Bad news for you guys, I know, but the good news is today I’m rounding up a whole bunch of leopard knits that are totally worth checking out.  (Even if you have to wear it inside…with the AC on.)

While lots of other areas around the country are currently layering, bundling, and cozying up, Southern California is still showing off some warm and sunny shorts weather.  (During the day at least.)  The nights have been chilly enough for sweaters and the occasional fire in the fireplace, but during the day, I’m living for dresses, fall skirts, and my trusty leather shorts.

I’ve loved leather shorts for years and recently snagged this pretty camel pair on Amazon for under $30.  (Size up in these.)  I love them paired with an easy thermal and cardigan and will be wearing them with this cozy little ivory sweater for an upcoming holiday event.  The Amazon fashion finds have been SO good lately, and I’m working on a new Amazon finds post that will go up this week.

Hope everyone has a great week ahead!

I could probably ramble off a million reasons why I love fall – sweater weather, a favorite chicken chili recipe, football season, boots and booties, the countdown to Thanksgiving, all things pumpkin – the list goes on and on.  And somewhere at the top of my list is definitely seasonal home decor.  It’s just so nice having a few fresh updates in our everyday decor, and I tend to focus on our dining room and entryway.

So today I’m sharing a couple of peeks into our fall home decor, and I have to say, it just makes me so happy.  I’ve been collecting things here and there over the years from HomeGoods, Target, Amazon, Hobby Lobby, and other stores, but I’m linking lots of similar finds here.  Also, you can check out other shots of our seasonal home decor here.  What are you guys most excited about this fall season?
