Mane Goals With Aussie

If there’s one particular type of photo that I’m constantly stalking on Instagram and Pinterest, it’s the gals with the killer manes.  The thick, flowing, Rapunzel-haired girls give me ALL of the hair envy.  And also, total hair goals to work towards.  After years and years of highlights, at-home dye jobs (in college, horrifying), extensions, bad cuts and lack of trims, my hair was seriously crying for help.  Annnnnd, not to mention, my straightener and curling wand are never really out of sight.

In recent years though, I’ve really tried to be a little smarter with my hair habits.  I take hair supplements daily and try to limit the amount of times per week that I wash my hair.  Admittedly that is still a huge work in progress because my hair tends to get oily quickly.  (Dry shampoo definitely helps a ton though.)  When I do wash my hair, I love to stick with a morning routine that’s simple, and while I’m always down to try the expensive beauty products out there, I also love finding favorites that are affordable.  (I think most blondes would agree that we tend to spend enough in the salon alone!)  Lately I’ve been taking Aussie’s Total Miracle Collection for a spin, and y’all, it’s a winner.  The winter (well, Southern California winter) weather lately has made my hair and skin really dry, but this shampoo, conditioner and conditioning treatment have really helped breathe a little life back into my hair.  For me, that really translates to how my hair holds a curl, how the ends look, and how knotty it can get at the end of the day.  Aussie’s 3 Minute Miracle Strong Conditioning Treatment helps reduce damage and makes hair 10x stronger against damage.  Plus, Aussie’s Total Miracle Collection 7N1 Shampoo and Conditioner’s moisturizing frizz control system makes hair silky smooth while strengthening it against damage.  And the smell of Aussie products have always been a favorite of mine.  You can purchase the products on Amazon which just makes life so much easier.  How did we live before our Amazon Prime accounts?

After washing, I make sure to leave myself plenty of time for air-drying before firing up the blow-dryer, straightener and curling wand.  (I usually blow-dry upside-down, straighten the pieces around my face, and then curl big, loose sections.)  When brushing or combing my hair, I’ve learned how important it is to be so gentle.  (I mean, who knew yanking a brush through your mane like a crazy person could be bad for it?  Ummm…)  At night, I sleep with my hair in a low braid or a bun on top of my head so that the following morning I can fluff a little, reapply dry shampoo, and maybe re-curl a couple of pieces.  (Or, let’s be honest, throw it in a high ponytail and call it a day.)  It’s all still a learning process, and there are plenty of hours to be spent drooling over Pinterest and Instagram ahead, but I’m pretty sure I’m on my way.  What are some of the best hair tips and budget products you’ve found over the years?

Last-Minute (Non-Lame) Gifts You Can Order Today

Minted Christmas Card Minted photo cards (c/o);  Williams-Sonoma peppermint bark and snowman marshmallows

So it’s Wednesday, officially about four days until Christmas, and you’re still scratching your head about those last few names on your list.  The stores are all madhouses, the free last-minute shipping is dwindling, and you’re feeling like better luck next year.  But before you throw in the towel and get all bah humbug on me, take a little look below because I’m rounding up some of the best last-minute gifts that the guys and girls on your list will actually love, scout’s honor.  I mean, I was never actually a scout of any kind, but just trust, y’all.  And here we go:

Amazon Prime – If you have Amazon Prime, then you know how amazing it is for ordering literally EVERYTHING, and if you don’t already have it, then maybe it’s time to gift it to yourself, girl.  The benefits are SO worth it to us, and we use our membership all the time.  Also, if your recipient already has Prime, they can add the months onto their membership, or they can convert it to an Amazon gift card.  Which brings me to…

Amazon Gift Card – Since Eric and I have Amazon Prime, we seriously order from Amazon multiple times a week, especially during our construction process.  It makes picking out light fixtures, rugs and furniture, and small necessities in our house so easy, and most things are delivered to your door in 48 hours.  Plus, if you need a dress or shoe or bag STAT, you can get that delivered quickly too.  Fo’ free.

Uber Gift Card – Sign me up for this gift, please!  I seriously don’t know anyone in my area who doesn’t regularly use Uber, and for good reason.  It’s SO convenient.  An added bonus of these gift cards?  The recipient can add the code into their app right away and then toss the card which makes things super easy.

Airbnb Gift Card – For the travel lover, this is a no-brainer.  Whether they pick out a place in Timbuktu or a cozy little spot in their own hometown, these gift cards will cover it.

Southwest Gift Card – (or any travel gift card, really) – Well, because travel ain’t cheap, and fifty bucks off is fifty bucks off.

Postmates Gift Card – If you live in a small town somewhere, you probably have no idea what Postmates is, and that’s probably for the best.  Once you’re sucked in, you’re in, and there’s no way out.  It’s a meal delivery service similar to Uber, and Eric and I have been guilty of using it a time or two or twenty.

Netflix Gift Card – I’ll be honest – Eric and I don’t use our Netflix account THAT much, but when we want to watch something that’s only available on Netflix, we’re really happy to have it.  That said, we don’t watch nearly as many movies or shows as the normal guy or gal.  Poor attention spans or something like that, but the kids these days, they really love the Neflix.  And now I’m officially old.

Need more ideas?  Head over here for a slew of other gift cards to give this season.  You’re in the home stretch, friends!

This may be my first dress with bell sleeves, but it definitely won’t be my last.  Who knew that throwing on a pair of throw-back sleeves like these could make you want to dance around?  Or, like, wave to people you don’t even know.  “Heeeeyyy, girl.  Over here waving at you with my bell sleeves.”  I knew when I first saw this dress it would be a new fave because that embroidery is just so cute.  And just in time for the 4th of July, it’s on sale and still in stock in all sizes.  So add it to your cart and use your Prime account (Did you know that you can use your Amazon Prime account for Shopbop purchases?) to have this little pretty at your door in time for the fireworks.  Hope everyone has an amazing holiday weekend!

Still Summer

1. Athleta Metallic Sun Hat (on sale!);  2. Norma Kamali Bill Halter;  3. Norma Kamali Bill Ruched Bottom;  4. Kate Spade New York Gayla Sunglasses;  5. Kenna-Maxi Heidi Coverup;  6. Tobey Summer Straw Beach Tote;  7. AshramChic Mala Beads (Look for Less here);  8. Lead Quartz Beaded Bracelet Set;  9. Tkees Flip Flops

Maybe I have my recent time spent in San Francisco to blame (and in particular the 30 or so minutes shivering at the Golden Gate Bridge) or maybe it’s an upcoming trip to New York for Fashion Week, but my mind has been wandering to fall fashion lately.  I can’t help it.  To me, there’s just nothing like those first cool days (which unfortunately come around December here…) where you can throw on a sweater and scarf and boots and whatever else your heart desires.  (Whatever, I sweat it out in the fall here.)

Yesterday I came to from a mind wander in my 100 degree house and realized that dang-it, it’s still summer, and you live at the beach, woman.  Our summer here is really just beginning (the “June Gloom” struggle this year was really real), and there’s nothing better than a swimsuit and breezy coverup all weekend long.  I came across the Kenna-Maxi brand recently, and I’m pretty much in love with every piece.  They’re luxe but worth the price for that special vacation or if you, like me, plan to live in one.  A few bohemian accessories and a beach bag to hold the essentials are all you need.  Here’s hoping everyone is soaking up the summer and living in the moment!

Beauty Talk: Beach Waves

Towel, Bag and Sandals: (c/o) Old Navy
My Style Diaries was started with one thing in mind: your wardrobe.  And shoes.  And jewelry.  Lots of jewelry.  OK, so that’s three things.  And it was only a matter of time before it branched out to cover complete style, including a huge part of your (and my) personal style: beauty.  I’m excited to start a new series on the blog to chat about beauty products that I’m currently loving, using, or lusting after, appropriately named Beauty Talk.  With summer weighing heavy on the brain, there’s no better beauty product binge to start out with than the ever-elusive beach waves.  You know you’ve drooled over the pictures.  That model off duty (ahem, Gisele) or beach-loving babe and her lust-worthy, looks-so-easy beach waves.  I’m lucky enough to live by the beach, and I love the soft waves I get after a day spent in the salt air.  Wanting to recreate the look, I’ve tried just about every pre-packaged “ocean spray” I can get my hands on, and above are a few favorites that have stood the test of time.  (Bonus: They’re also perfect for spritzing while you’re at the beach.)

Bumble and Bumble’s Surf Spray is pretty much the holy grail.  Perfect for beginners (or my fine hair), a few spritzes go a long way, and the smell is amazing.  The Kevin.Murphy version is a bit pricy, but it leaves me with nice, conditioned waves.  (A problem with ocean or salt sprays is the dryness that ensues.  A little leave-in conditioner or dry oil spray usually helps.)  The third, a spray by Wella, is a bit on the lighter side, and I’ve found that it’s pretty easy not to overdo it.  I usually spritz one of these when my hair is just about dry, and pulling my hair into a loose pony with a wide elastic (like the Emi-Jay ties above) can help to tame my frizz without leaving deep ponytail lines.  If you’re looking for an easy way to achieve those model-esque beach waves, I’d definitely recommend these, but I’m interested to know: what’s your favorite way to create beach waves?
