Since returning home from Cabo last week, my mind has turned to New York Fashion Week and everything fall fashion.  And while my mind may be on fall, I’ve got to be honest with myself: it’s still REAL warm in Southern California, and my wardrobe still has a little summer life left in it.  (I’m currently typing this with a fan blowing full-speed in my face.  And, like, I’m still sweating.)  Over the next week or so I’ll be sharing a couple more looks from our #SBCGetaway to Cabo, and this pool-side look has “beat the heat” written all over it.  My favorite kind of swim cover-ups are lightweight and not too sheer, and this one fits the bill perfectly.  And honestly, it really wouldn’t be too surprising to find me wearing this mid-week, sprawled out on our (somewhat) cool tile floor, typing away on my new, non-crashed computer.  Life is good, y’all.

It’s rare that I find a maxi skirt that I really love, but this one from Alloy really caught my eye.  I love fall-ish taupe color and crinkled pleating, and it works just as well now with a sleeveless top as it will later with a cropped sweater.  A fringed handbag and feather-embellished hat helped to complete the boho look.  Hope everyone has an amazing weekend!

From Red Carpet to Real Life

I’ve mentioned it a time or two, but I’ll say it again: I love awards season.  And while the dresses (and shoes and jewels) tend to be the main event, there’s also a ton of inspiration to be drawn from the hair and makeup statements throughout the night.  The fun part is taking a dramatic red carpet beauty look and incorporating it into your everyday routine, so I’m teaming up with CoverGirl, Olay, Pantene, and Secret to bring a little Hollywood glamour into your real life.

At this year’s Golden Globes, Reese Witherspoon was doing her classic, girl-next-door thing that she does so well, and I thought her makeup was so understated and pretty.  Her bronze-y, copper-ish liner seriously brought out her blue eyes, but the star of the show was definitely her flawless skin.  As I get older, I’m paying much closer attention to my skin and the products that I use, and Olay products have become a true ally.  Recently I’ve been religiously using Olay’s Regenerist Luminous Tone Perfecting Cream, and I can already see a real difference in my skin.  When you feel good about your skin, the rest of your makeup is a breeze.  After a bit of blush, a pinkish-nude lipgloss, and a coppery shadow used with a heavy hand as liner, I finished off the look with CoverGirl’s new Bombshell Volume by LashBlast Mascara.  It’s a two-step mascara that can be layered and layered to add maximum drama.

In the hair department, well, I never met a heat styler I didn’t like, and product overload doesn’t scare me.  Thanks to Pantene’s new Damage Detox Deep Clean Purifying Shampoo, I’m getting the gunk out and working on taming my mane a la Reese.  Final step before heading out?  Secret’s new Destinations Collection in Paris Romantic Rose – smells amazing and lasts forever.  (48 hours is the promise, and I’m a believer.)  To take this look out for dinner with the girls, leather skinnies, an easy tee, and a few gold accessories are all you need.  Which red carpet beauty looks will you be recreating this season?

July 4th

Picture

Hooray, Hurrah!  The 4th is upon us (or, the 3rd is, actually), and I can think of no better way to spend it than at the beach.  For a festive day in the sand, a patriotic suit and a great coverup are pretty much all you need.  Of course, bold sandals, a holds-everything beach bag, aviators and a hat never hurt anyone.  Finish the look off with a beach-proof bracelet or two and a healthy dose of SPF.  Hope everyone has an amazing 4th of July!

Garden Party

Picture

When it comes to summer florals, there are a couple of different roads to take.  There’s the muted-hued subtle approach (seen on yesterday’s maxi skirt) or the full-blown, in-your-face garden variety, like the flippy dress above.  Pair this backless number with spot-on ruffled heels, chunky gold jewelry, and a woven leather clutch for a statement-making, cocktail-appropriate look that is perfect for any upcoming summer soirees.  Hope everyone is having a great start to their summer!

Maxx Style Scout

If you’ve been following along on Instagram over the past week, you may have noticed I’ve spent a chunk of time checking out the trends at T.J. Maxx.  (And perhaps a larger chunk of time simply checking out the handbags.  Note to self: must remember to focus on clothes sometimes…but the bags were SO good in the meantime.)  As part of the #maxxstylescout campaign (the Maxx-capades as I’m lovingly calling it), I’ll be showing you four trends of the season using clothing and accessories from, yep, T.J. Maxx.

This week focuses on pastels and ladylike silhouettes and prints.  I spent a leisurely Saturday spending way too much time roaming through every department.  I headed to the fitting rooms three times on account of finding something I’d missed every time I came out.  I had chosen my outfit: a floaty floral blouse, tailored white pants and these tan and gunmetal shoes that I’ve actually had my eye on for a while now.  And then I saw this dress.  The sherbet striped, pleated maxi was something so far out of my comfort zone, but I immediately loved it.  It’s by one of my favorite brands and is so well-made.  The under layer is fitted and structured, and the outer chiffon is so fun for spring.  It will be perfect for an upcoming wedding, and it’s also been on display in my house for a few days now.  (Although the manfriend says it’s time to put it away.)  That’s the thing about T.J. Maxx – when you aren’t expecting it, you’ll find something so perfect and beautiful.  Or maybe just something to wear for the night.

And now, T.J. Maxx is letting you in on the fun.  By submitting pictures of your own Maxx-capades finds, you can win up to a $500 gift card!  Simply post your image on Twitter, Instagram or Facebook and tag #maxxstyle to enter.  Be sure to mention the designer and price of your TJ score!  (Check out additional details and the official rules here.)  Good luck, and happy shopping!

Winter at the Beach

Dress: (c/o) LA Made; Sweater: Heartloom; Sunglasses: Ray-Ban; Necklace and Ring: (c/o) Stella & Bow; Bracelets: (c/o) InPink
I’m a sucker for a good black maxi for spring, and this one from LA Made’s resort collection is definitely a new favorite.  Yesterday I decided it definitely couldn’t sit in my closet until spring, so I threw it on with a favorite oversized sweater for a walk down to the beach.  The fabric is super soft, and the neck cutout and side slits make it equally appealing with a pair of heels for a night out.  Right now, you can score this resort-ready dress, as well as anything else on LA Made’s site, for 20% off using code “NIKKI20” at checkout.  Happy Shopping!

Scarf: Love Quotes (c/o) Lash Clothing
I’m a pretty firm believer that a great accessory can really transform an outfit, and for me, a standout scarf is always a favorite, regardless of the season.  (While we’re on the subject, Love Quotes is about as good as it gets when it comes to a season-less, cozy game changer.)  Inspired by the scarf in today’s post, I’m so excited to team up with Lash Clothing to give one lucky reader $100 to spend on the spring wardrobe necessities of her choice.  Whether you’ve got your eyes set on a staple black maxi, wear-everywhere booties, or a sleek new accessory, the choice is yours.  Enter below with a few simple clicks.  This giveaway is open to US residents only and ends on February 4th, 2013.  Don’t forget to share with friends by clicking the Tweet and/or Like buttons below.  Good luck!

Modern Classic

Create a modern take on a classic look by pairing ladylike, tailored basics with unexpected accessories.  Worn with a sleek white coat, a basic black shirt dress is seasonless, and an oversized wool hat gives an old school vibe.  Spiked platforms, mirrored aviators and a leopard clutch update the look, while a menswear-inspired watch and chain bracelet add the finishing touches.
